This atmospheric surf art print depicts the renown surf spot Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. Not only is Jeffreys Bay known for its legendary waves and international surf competitions, but also for its diverse landscape and flora – all captured in this surf art print.

When I first went to Jeffreys Bay I was struck by how the beach landscapes were framed by scores of majestic Cape Aloes, in their reds and oranges against the many blues hues of the ocean. I have never seen anywhere quite like this, and as you may know from my other prints, I am a huge fan of the South African indigenous flora – fynbos – which is endemic to the Western and Eastern Cape.

The best thing for me though, was that my friend made me get up early one morning (I am not an early riser!) to walk down the beach with them in search of waves. As the sun rose, a seemingly unending pod of dolphins swam and jumped their way in to the shallows from the horizon, in a neat line, in search of their own waves to surf. It was one of the most beautiful sights I had experienced in my life. Later that day I caught their neatly formed, happily jumping queue making its way back to the deeper ocean, into the setting sun.

This illustrated surf art print has all of these things I love about JBay – the never ending blues of the sea, set off by the towering red aloes in between succulent and scrubby bushes, with a surfer just about to join the rest who are already in. There are even a couple of dolphins in the waves, but you’ll need to search to find them!
