Description
Bristol Harbour is one of my favourite places to visit in our pretty city so this print is aptly named, Shipshape Bristol Fashion (which is a nautical term meaning everything is in perfect order, and as it should be). It has so much to offer for everybody, from its impressive ships and cultural significance, to family activities, and great places to eat and drink. It is therefore hardly surprising that this art print is positively bursting out of its seams with many of the things I love (with huge sprinklings of artistic licence).
Our possibly most famous export – Gromit the dog – is poised on the Bristol Ferry, literally larger than life. He is surrounded by other popular water vehicles including the Number 7 Shark ferry, and the Tower Belle (who hasn’t had a party on that boat?). Moored to the back is one of my personal favourite independent music venues, the Thekla, sporting its older guise when it still had Banksy’s Grim Reaper on the side (the NHS flag is also my addition, but we can never thank them enough, can we?). The beautiful Matthew, which is a reconstruction of the original ship sailed to Newfoundland by John Cabot in 1497, is also cruising by, proudly flying the Rainbow flag. In between all this water activity, is Colston’s statue, enjoying a well earned swim – better watch out for that shark ferry! Lined against the blue sky are Bristol’s multi-coloured houses, and the Cabot Tower is poised on the hill behind Purifier House.
And to sum up the wonderful spirit of Bristol (and we all know 2020 has been a trying year), a retired RAF pilot took to the skies last summer to create giant smileys that could be seen from miles away, to add some cheer to the people of the city.
This print will definitely brighten up a Bristol fan’s home, and will work just as well in a kid’s room.
