This bold art print features a Cape Town scene with a Cape Sugarbird perched on a King Protea, with its spectacular long tail fluttering across the scene, set against a dramatic sunset over Table Mountain.

The main thing I miss about South Africa (aside from my family and friends) is the unique nature, especially where I am from, the Southwestern Cape reqion, where the floral kingdom species’ numbers comprise of around 80% fynbos. Fynbos is extremely diverse, with over 9000 plant species, of which around 6200 are endemic, meaning they are not found anywhere else in the world. Fynbos is the smallest and richest per unit of area of the world’s six floral kingdoms; it is said that it is even more diverse than the richest tropical rain forest in South America, including the Amazon. Isn’t that amazing?

With this unique flora come the unique birds that rely on fynbos for food, and the Cape Sugarbird is one such. It is often found on the King Protea flower (South Africa’s national flower), and uses its long, sharp beak  to reach the nectar with its long brush-tipped tongue. The Cape sugarbird and various sunbirds are a common but very special sight in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, which lies at the foot of Table Mountain.

Table Mountain of course has to feature here, it is impossible to ignore and make us Capetonians go weak at the knees – we all LOVE our mountain!  And then that dramatic sunset; nowhere does sunsets like Africa. Fab-u-lous.
